Meet the Owner: Charlita Young

Talk about God directing your path! Where do I even start? I don’t have the story of growing up in the kitchen beside my mom or grandma, learning family recipes and falling in love with cooking. Nope—not me. I actually ran from the kitchen. I left home at nineteen barely knowing how to prepare much of anything.

Later in life, I started working at my cousin Sharonda and my aunt Brenda's café, Good Karma Coffee House, and that’s where everything began to shift. I learned to make sandwiches, operate a manual espresso machine, and craft delicious desserts.

When God Redirects Your Journey

Twice, I walked away to pursue what I thought was my destiny—but God had other plans. Each time, He closed doors and led me right back. The final time, I returned as manager… just in time for our baker to quit. Suddenly, the girl who ran from the kitchen had to bake.

My first instinct was to run again, but God wouldn’t let me. Instead, I discovered something amazing—I was good at it.

At Good Karma, we created gluten-free flour mixes and developed vegan, allergen-friendly desserts without sacrificing flavor, and seeing customers light up was all the confirmation I needed.

Stepping Out on Faith

After a few months, I felt called to grow even more, so I enrolled in culinary school to learn traditional baking.

A year and a half later, newly married with one child, I graduated summa cum laude in 2018. I continued mastering my craft until Good Karma closed in 2020 due to COVID. From there, I stepped out on faith and started my own home-based bakery. In 2023, God opened another incredible door—I began selling my pastries through Ira Lane Coffee at Tyler Perry Studios.

And now, here we are, continuing to grow and share desserts that bring joy, proving that when God directs your path, the outcome is always sweeter.
